If it's Saturday, surely there's a roadside chicken bbq somewhere between Central Square and Brewerton. This week the CS Band Boosters Club sold chicken dinners (half chicken, salt potatoes, coleslaw) right in the center of The Square, with excellent promotion from band members posted all around the bbq, enthusiastically encouraging support from passers by. Pretty hard to resist the wonderful fragrance wafting around the monument areas, and business was brisk.

Early Bloomers

The first harbingers of spring in Central Square, the highly coveted Early Blooming WhirlyRainbow Flowers, began appearing magically last week in the planters around the village. Project Bloom planted the new hybrid WhirlyRainbow bulbs last fall after ordering them from the Burpee's catalog. "We weren't sure if they'd grow here," a PB spokesperson explained, "but they looked so great in the catalog, we had to give them a try." As well as being very early bloomers, the WhirlyRainbow Flowers appear to be hardy and long-lasting, and may even be the reason why pairs of robins have been seen by the little league fields already, and crocuses began blooming almost a week earlier this year than last.

Squirrel Census

March marks the beginning of the first annual Village of Central Square Squirrel Census. Although they do all pretty much look alike, see if you can't come up with the number of squirrels that actually live on your property (in the nests up in the trees, or, perhaps you're fortunate enough to have them living right in house, maybe in the attic - an exceptional honor for any homeowner).

Please count only your own squirrels. If the neighbor squirrels come to eat at your bird feeders, or in your chestnut tree, they're still the neighbor's squirrels and should be added to the neighbor's tally. Please distinguish between grey, red, and black squirrels. This year we will only be counting live squirrels, so please do not include any dead squirrels on your property (including in the road in front of your house).

Email your count to csqwateringhole@gmail.com by April 1st. It would be appreciated if you mentioned generally, if not specifically, where your own personal squirrel farm is located. Village squirrels only are eligible for this count. Feel free to send along any of your relevant squirrel photos.

And watch for the Woodchuck Census (woodchuck, ground hog, whistle pig - all the same thing?) this spring, when they come out of hibernation.

Medical Center - Update

To everyone who has taken an interest and supported the cause through letter writing, etc., it seems there is light at the end of the tunnel! The Governor is putting up $8 mil in grants to Oswego County for improving primary and urgent care in Oswego, Fulton and Central Square. What that will actually mean to CS is yet to be seen, but it is certainly forward progress.

Central Square Medical Center Rally – Friday, Sept. 4 at 10 am

On Friday September 4th at 10 am there will be a (peaceful) rally in front of the Central Square Health Center to draw media attention to the Center’s uncertain future. For our senior citizens, keeping the health center open is critical. With limited access to healthcare, most admit they just won't be able get the care they need. Even those willing/able to travel elsewhere are finding that many other doctors are not accepting new patients, especially Medicare or Medicaid patients.

Interestingly enough, Lifetime's own mission statement reads in part:

We exist to assure, in the communities we serve, that as many people as possible have affordable, dignified access to needed, effective health care services, including long-term care services.

We recognize the need, and our responsibility, to reach out to all segments of the communities we serve, particularly the poor and the aged and others who are underserved, to enhance quality of life, including health status.

All anyone is asking is that they uphold their own mission statement.

Set up for 9/11 Tribute at Goettel Park This Friday

Friday September 4th starting at 1:00 pm Goettel Park volunteers are invited to help pound the almost 3,000 flags into the ground again this year for the 9/11 ceremony. Anyone who can spare some time would be appreciated. We will be there from 1pm until it gets done...rain or shine (unless lighting). High school students are welcome to take this opportunity for community service for health class or Presidential award. If you can, bring a hammer and screw driver please.

9/11 Tribute at Community Park

The Village and American Legion are planning a ceremony at Goettel Park on Friday, September 11. They are looking for all scouts to have a parade from the Central Square Fire Department to the park. They will be leaving at 6:30 from the Fire Hall and will hold a ceremony at the park, similar to last year. Interested troop leaders can contact Ed Cook or Herb at the Legion - 668-6948.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, several big fires destroyed large parts of the village of Central Square (one - in 1926 - happened Christmas Eve night - by dawn on Christmas morning, the village had been destroyed). Each disaster fueled the resolve of local business men who joined together to start, fund, and then earnestly build up a substantial, all volunteer, fire company capable of protecting the village from further devastation.

Over the years, hundreds of our neighbors and fellow village citizens have served as volunteer Firefighters and Auxiliary members. Unless you've had a direct encounter with them as a result of a fire or emergency, you might not even know they exist. They're pretty low key about what they do, but what they do is incredible.

Every time you hear the fire alarm sound, at any time of the day or night, they're dropping what they're doing and responding to it. They get out of warm beds on cold winter nights and rush to help with medical emergencies, car wrecks (and train wrecks), and fires. They stay on sites for hours, sometimes days, round the clock, whatever it takes.

On hot summer days they arrive on the scene within amazingly short periods of time, fully suited up in heavy, hot protective gear, often in remarkably large groups. Even more amazing, when they need backup, they can depend on fire departments from all over the school district, and even outside of it, to also quickly arrive on the scene to help.

Firemen are the unsung heros of the Village of Central Square. They're always there for us, taking care of us, fixing what they can fix, then quietly going back to what they were doing before the alarm went off. It's a bit of a chaotic way to live a life, responding to crises. One misses dinners, birthday parties, a good night's sleep. We owe a debt of gratitude to these men and women for keeping our village safe.

This summer, in July, the Central Square Fire Company celebrated its 100th Anniversary with -- among other events -- a big beautiful parade and a chicken and ribs barbeque and free concert at Goettel Community Park. They were joined by firefighters from all over the school district, and outside of it. It was a beautiful event.

Undaunted by rain, the Central Square Redhawk Field Band led the parade down Main Street and up to the football stadium Friday night, kicking off the annual Homecoming Weekend. Their highly polished, exciting music electrified the village. Onlookers reported getting 'goosebumps'. No wonder they became the New York State Field Band Champions of 2007~!
